Congratulations to Samira Akther on Receiving the 2025 STLE Philadelphia Section Scholarship

We are excited to congratulate Samira Akther, a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student, on receiving a $750 scholarship from the Philadelphia Section of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). This competitive award recognizes outstanding students with a strong interest in tribology, lubrication, and condition monitoring.

Samira’s project, titled “Listening to Failure: The Sound of a Failing Bearing” investigates acoustic-based techniques to monitor lubrication degradation in rolling element bearings—critical components in machinery across many industries. Her research compares the effectiveness of acoustic emission (AE) sensors and audible-range microphones in detecting early signs of lubrication failure. By developing a controlled experimental setup, she aims to evaluate whether low-cost audio tools can offer reliable insights into lubrication health, supporting more efficient and scalable predictive maintenance strategies.

Samira will conduct her research at the Temple Mechatronics Lab under the supervision of Dr. Osman Sayginer. Her work stands out for its innovative approach and potential to contribute to the field of tribology through accessible and cost-effective monitoring solutions.

Congratulations again to Samira on this well-deserved recognition. We are proud of your dedication to advancing undergraduate research at Temple University.
