Hannah and Santiago Earn Best Visual Poster Recognition at ASME Philadelphia Banquet

Hannah Tugado and Santiago Troya earned the Best Visual Poster award at the ASME Philadelphia Section Banquet for their presentation on the Drone Mounted Air Quality Sensor System initiative.

The project was developed as part of cOllab: Community Impact, a research and mentorship initiative within the Mechatronics Lab that connects university students, faculty, and community partners through hands on, community focused engineering projects. Through mentorship, outreach, and collaborative learning experiences, cOllab supports educational access and encourages students to apply engineering skills toward meaningful real world challenges.

As part of the initiative, the students partnered with Northeast High School of Philadelphia to perform air quality measurements using a custom air quality sensing system developed by the team. The sensor package was designed to be mounted onto a drone built in collaboration with students from Northeast High School, allowing the group to collect and analyze local environmental data through drone based monitoring.

Santiago led the electronics development and sensor integration for the system, while Hannah focused on the mechanical housing design and drone integration. Their work combined hands on engineering, interdisciplinary collaboration, and applied research in mechatronics and environmental monitoring.

The project was presented during the ASME Philadelphia Section Banquet poster session, where submissions were reviewed by engineering professionals and members of the ASME community. The jury recognized the team’s presentation for its strong visual communication, technical quality, and community impact.

This achievement highlights the continued collaboration between the Mechatronics Lab at Temple University, the ASME Temple University Section, Northeast High School of Philadelphia, and ASME Philadelphia Section while showcasing the innovation and dedication of Temple Engineering students.

Congratulations to Hannah and Santiago on this accomplishment.
